  • 115 tilt and trim question

I have a 99' 115 yamaha 2 stroke. Just brought it back from fishing (where it worked great all morning) and went to lower the motor, and it would not move up or down. I used the manual release valve to lower it, and now it still won't move. TT Fluid is full.

However, I hear the motor and pump running fine when trying to trim both up and down, except nothing happens. I have tried both the switch on the throttle and motor as well. The only other problem I have had is lately I have to trim the motor up briefly, before being able to lower it after trailering.
Just wondering if anyone could guide me in the right starting direction to troubleshoot.

*I was able to get it going again after changing the T&T fluid out, now I have noticed a leak in the tilt hydraulic...so off to replacing seals. Do I need to remove the entire T&T unit to do this?

Is your locking tab down for towing. Happened to me once and forgot the tab was in lock position.

Thanks for the suggestion. I can see how that could happen, but not the case here.

I was able to lower it via manual release valve, and stop it in about the middle (Where it is currently at, and "stuck").

Also, I haven't tried it, but can you manually raise the motor when the manual release valve is open?

You took 17mm nut off res that is fill

Flat head screw I am not sure of its purpose. Double check the fill because I even messed this up. Once I figured out my rebuild went smooth. I know on Mercury's relays go bad for pwr trim maybe switch them around.

            It's not hard

I did both trim and tilt piston. You need to order cap removal tool, ebay has a seller mikes******** $59 bucks. Spanner wrench for piston portion. It is hard if the caps will not come off though and take your time there aluminum. I pulled pin that connects to motor and was able to tilt motor forward enough to pull shaft all way out. Yours might be different. They charge $1500 bucks to do this simple job or more lol. I put atf dexron 3 in my system so far it works.

              tilt spanner tool

I saw the tool for removing the cap off the trim unit on ebay, but I believe yamaha requires another size/different tool for removing the tilt cap. I would hate to mess the tilt cap up since I believe you can not replace those, only the trim caps.

Anyone aware of a tool that would work without having to pay over $100?

Shipyard Island Marina offers a tool rental program, where I could rent for $25. Seems pretty fair. I may go that route, if none of the local mechanics will let me borrow one.

              Thanks agian for the replies.

                Cap Removal Tool - substitute

If you have not already bought the Yamaha tool I have another solution. I was told the tool tends to break as the caps can be tought to get off. I just ordered new caps along with the seals and used a punch to remove the caps. It only took about 3 or 4 stikes with a hammer and a punch to free the caps and then they spun right off. This advice was given to me by a Yamaha shop as they found this is the best way to get it done.
