  • Starter won't work

I have a 1991 55 h.p. yamaha outboard and I accidently touched the positive side of the solenoid to the ground on the starter and now I can't get the motor to turn over. Could I have fried the solenoid or blown a fuse somewhere going to the starter? Was turning over fine until the touch. Any help is appreciated.

Check that main in-line fuse under cowling, starboard side, may be in a black rubber in-line fuse holder, about a 20 or 30 amp in-line fuse. Good Luck!

Checked fuse and it is fine.

Also now I can't jump the solenoid either. I get no response when trying it. I know there is power to one side but nothing happens when jumped. Shouldn't I hear a clicking or something? Could starter be damaged?

Use a volt meter and check if and where you are loosing voltage.
You may have a negative connection problem not just the positive.

Had solenoid and starter checked. Both good. Turns out it was a short in a wire going to the solenoid. Thanks for all the input. Now got to get it to idle. Time to do a search on here.
