• lower unit

Took my 1990 200HP motor in for a lower unit and water pump servicing the other day and noticed a small crack beginning to appear near the torpedo. Mechanic said that it happens with time and nothing can be done. This is a very small crack and I wanted to get a different opinion or opinions. I saw a post from someone in the UK for these repairs but since I'm in the US, North Carolina, I was hoping for some answers from my area.

Thanks in advance.

carolina,
I haven't had experience with this, but if it were me, I would just monitor the situation - check the lower unit oil often for water intrusion, and look for oil leakage thru the crack.
The crack will probably get worse (Murphy's Law ), and eventually the lower unit will have to be torn down and the crack welded - but considering your outboard's age, the seals and o-rings are about due for a replacement anyway.
Good luck ,
