  • 115 V4 tilt mechanism

    Hi Guys,
New to the forum but know from reading old posts that this is a great place to find the answers to Yam problems.
I'm in England so no point in posting my engine number as non US numbers are different to yours but think I've identified it as an early eighties motor. It's a V4 Autolube model with power tilt and trim.
My problem is that suddenly the power tilt will only go up! Was working fine when I last used the boat. The battery is good and the engine went up fine but now it has reached the top, it won't come back down again.
If the switch is pressed to go up I can hear the tilt motor running but in the 'down' position there is nothing. This means, of course, that the engine looks fine but it ain't gonna push my boat like that!
Hope someone can help and thanks in advance.

Both up and down tilting, got their own separate relays.
Maybe the down relay, got stuck.
When u press the down button, do you hear the relay clicking ?
If not, then maybe the relay needs changing or there is something wrong with the up/down button...

The relays open and close both the + and -, so you will need to monitor both with a meter to see what is going on. If the relay is not even clicking then monitor the switch voltage also

Thanks for the replies guys. Sorry not been back earlier, been a bit unwell.
If it is a relay that's gone down how do I go about replacing it? Is there a diagram anywhere on the site that would show me the location of the relay. I'm no engineer but I'm willing to give it my best shot as long as I know I'm replacing the right bit.

Hi guys, suppose I should have tried this first before I wasted your time....the switch on the control box sends the engine up and down no problem so I guess the fault is with the switch on the engine. Don't shout at me please, I'm just a dumb Limey!
Something you could help me with though. Does anyone know the weight of the V4 115hp. It's a two stroke model. The other thing I'm unsure about is the way you lift the unit. I can only find one lifting eye behind the fly-wheel. Is the engine so well balanced that the one eye will take it straight up? Sounds too good to be true.
