  • Hooked Negative to Positive - What needs replaced

My dad hooked his negative to positive lead on the motor harness, and positive to negative. Hit the key - and smoke came out.

Other than figuring out how to put the smoke back in, what are the key components I should plan to replace?

He bought the boat / motor new in '92 and it is still in pristine condition - so it's worth fixing...

    Thanks

You might have to locate the fuse under the harness cover to see if it is blown that should be all. Providing he did not hold the key in the on position to long if so the wiring harness is next to check.

Thanks - that's the best place to start... With the description of smoke - I assume there are some melted ground wires somewhere.

After a trip back home found the smoke was the battery charger - that he also hooked up backwards... bad day i guess. Nothing at all wrong with the motor - not even the fuse. A new battery charger, a fresh charge, an vrooooom. all is well.
