1990 225 etxd cuts out in mid range

i have a 1990 225 etxd and as you accelerate in the mid range of throttle lever travel the engine cuts out/hesitates, when it gets to full throttle it seems to run fine. at low rpms and idle it seems to be ok for a while but then seems to load up on fuel because when i restart the boat at the dock to put it on the trailer it smokes eccessively and it doesn't clear up until i rev it up a few times. any ideas on what could be causing these problems? have you done any service?
clean carbs /rebuilt ever ?
changed any filters ??
plugs?
fuel pumps ?

yes, i have done all recommended service that i know of, cleaned carbs, replaced fuel filters, replaced spark plugs, but i havent done any thing with the fuel pumps. i also checked wiring connections, and for signs of abrasion, installed new batteries and repaired faulty connections going to the key switch.
