I've seen several discussions on this board concerning a seemingly overheating problem with Yamaha Outboards. In fact, I participated in one of these discussions as I have a problem with my 2003 200HP HPDI. At low idle my overheat buzzer comes on and drives me crazy. I put it in neutral and rev it up and eventually it goes off. I have never been able to get my pressure gauge to show much more than 8-10 lbs of pressure. Several participants have suggested the pressure relief valve as well as the thermostats and the impeller. My boat is a 21' Tunnel Shallowsport which is quite popular in the Texas bays. I also seem to lose my pump prime when I am running across the water and make a turn. I talked to the manufacturer of the boat and he told me he has seen this problem on numerous occasions with Yamahas. He told me that on every one of the instances, it was cured by replacing the impeller with an after market impeller instead of the Yamaha factory impeller. The brand name which he uses most often is Sierra. He stated that the Yamaha impeller is not near as stiff as some of the after market impellers and that is the problem. Has anyone had any experience with what I am talking about?? Thanks.

Not certain about aftermarket parts for Yamaha's, mine is brand new so I haven't gotten into any repairs yet.
However, on my old Evinrude, aftermarket water puimps were definately "stronger" than OEM. I replaced the first water pump with OEM, then a couple of years later replaced with aftermarket. Gained about 5lbs. on my water pressure gauge.
I do not remember the brand name of the aftermarket water pump. I would purchase them at my local Carquest Auto Parts store. Seems as if they we about have the money of OEM also.
