Rebuilding lower unit 92 150

Does anyone have any experience rebuilding a lower unit? Not sure what happened to mine but I bought a used engine that hadn't been run in a while and made the mistake of taking the boat out without checking the gear oil.
It either ran out (bad seal) or was empty and now the shaft is frozen. I got it off the engine cant get the gear box. Needs a special tool. Does anyone have any experience with repairing a lower unit? Is it better even though they're pretty expensive to buy another used one?

Tried to rebuild my 1991 115 leg, but even though everything was changed, water continued to contaminate the oil.
4 months ago bought a non-original lower drive... still in the process of breaking in...
