Yamaha 3 HP 2 stroke outboard

Hello, just bought a Yamaha 3 HP outboard off "Fleabay". I think it is an early 90s model, like a 91 or so. Someone said that these older motors don't have a water telltale, so I was wondering how to tell if it is pumping water correctly? I don't have the motor yet, but someone also said you can drill a hole somewhere into the block so it will stream water. Is that the way to go? Thanks.

If it happens you mean a 3.5HP air cooled (i.e. 3.5A or 3.5AC), I have some background info.

When you receive the engine, it would be useful if you post the serial number for accurate advice
