I have faulty ground. I know it is the ground because I have run a wire from the battery (negative) to metal on the engine and it works fine. have tried everything. Where does the main ground connect to the motor? Is it some obvious thing I am overlooking?

you have only pointed out the fact the negative cable may be bad.
what else can we say ?

The battery cable is located on the starboard side of the engine, has L shaped boots covering the connections. take the neg off and see if it is burned on one side. that will happen if it has been loose, also follow the cable into the boat and see where it connects with the battery or ground block. take all connections off and clean both sides. good luck
