confused/40 hp

I have found a 98 year 40 hp yamaha that only has two cly instead of 3. Is this correct How come two instead of 3 what is the difference. Will 703 control plug and work with this motor?
I am considering replacing a 86 three cly with this newer model.

I have a 2 cylinder 40hp yam in Australia - 2 stroke using pre-mix fuel. It is connected to Yam 703 remote control

the two cyl was based on the C series for the US market.
post the model number, the 2cyl C series wasnt avalible for the US market in 98.
