I have the book and the voltage tester to check the coils. The book says I need to load the battery with a load tester. Can I just run the battery down some and do the test.
yes, or leave the lights on for 20 minutes or so.
typically I check battery voltage with engine off then with engine running.
on your 175 you should see about 1.5V difference at about 1500 RPM.
