Water in fuel warning

First posting here.

Recently re-powered my boat with a 2006 Yamaha 90 4-stroke, 235 hours.

Motor runs perfect, but there is a blinking symbol in the tach that indicates water in the fuel.

Fuel in the tank is fresh, I have a 10 micron filter that is virtually new too. The small filter on the engine has been cleaned out.

I can't see that the motor even has a sending unit for water in the fuel. If it had one, where would it be

Could it be that something is connected that should not be? Could there be some kind of defect or incompatibility with the Yamaha tach?

I also have a problem with the trim indicator in the gauge no working properly. The plactic cam on the tilt tube is broken, which I understand is quite normal. I bought a new cam, have not installed it yet, however, when I move the sending unit manually, it seems to make no difference - could these two issues be related in any way

Is the motor and tach new to the boat or just the motor?

Who hooked it all up, was it plug and play or were modifications needed to get it all wired up?

The motor and tach are both new to my boat (repowered from Johnson vro). The tach was mounted with the same motor on the previous boat, and I noticed the same issues there too.

I installed the engine myself, with the help of a friend. Have never done anything like this before, but it seemed to be all color coded, plug and play

As mentioned in my original posting, the motor runs excellent, and therefore I have a hard time imagining that there is anything seriously wrong. But this is obviously frustrating, as I need to be able to see how the motor is trimmed, as well as be positively sure that there is not water in the fuel issue.

Here is another thing that I am not sure about.

There is this connector on the stb side of the motor that seems to be orphaned.

Does anyone know what this is - could it have anything to do with the issues described earlier.

Did you ask if it ever worked properly on the other boat?

Sounds like it broke, has a wiring harness problem or it never was hooked up properly.

Do you have a manual for the meter you can look at?

Maybe Rodbolt17 will chime in and give you the answers you are looking for.

there is the problem with the trim, right there in the second photo.
that connector is the trim harness and its obviously not connected to the tach.
your engine isnt equipped with water in the fuel detect.
something is wired wrong.

Are you able to point me to where to look for the female connector for the trim? - I have not been able to find anything matching under the cowling.

that harness with the cap and the pink,orange black and gray wires goes to the tach.
that harness is purchased seperatly and does not come with the motor.

What confuses me is that the connector in the picture is wired to the tach. Does that not mean that I have the harness in mention
Problem is I can't see any connector around the engine that it can be hooked up to.

got a better look at the connector behind the 10 pin main.
you need the harness adapter most likly.
without knowing the part number of the tach its likly the tach needs the 4 pin to 8 pin adapter.
can you get a decent picture of the rear of the tach?

Thanks rodbolt! I am pretty sure something is missing.

I have attached a picture of the rear of the tach, and another picture of the wiring on the stb side of the motor.

I forgot to update re. the outcome of this.

I had a mechanic look at the outboard and he immediately noticed that there was a piece missing from the harness - 10 minutes (and a hundred bucks) later, all was working perfectly.
