Cdi units

Can anybody tell me, does a CDI unit on a 50hp DETO 1990 ish - Will work .....or not work at all ?? Seems to run ok and power up, but after a while (see prev threads !) the engine goes to firing on 1 cylinder or "get me home mode quick " ???
