  • Ignition timings on 115 2T

    Hello everybody.
2 years ago I bought a used 115 mod. year 1991, which had been rebuilt twice in the past.
I have used it for 38 hours since then, without any issue.
Today I tried to confirm whether its ignition timings are OK, and according to my measurements, both the full advance and the full retard timing marks are a few milimeters off.
Could this be intentionally so or is it an error on the part of the previous owner ? Should I rectify the timings according to the manual, or am I risking something here ? Could these timings be selected by the previous mechanic, in order to secure proper engine operation, considering its age ?
I just want to be sure that I get the maximum performance and the minimum of fuel consumption, thats why I am looking into it...

The full advance was a bit less (a few mm towards 20-22 degrees) than the stock 25 degrees BTDC, and the full retard was a bit more than the stock 5 degrees ATDC (2-3 degrees)... i reckon...

did you use a dial indicator to verify pointer alignment?
      its the first step.

there are two methods of setting the ign timing.
          statically and dynamically.
staticlly is NOT the prefered method but will be close.
to properly set ign timing at WOT it must be running at WOT and its rated load.
would I change anything for 2* of ign timing when the spec is plus or minus 1*??
nope you wont notice a thing.

            Fair enough.
            One more thing.
During the past 38 hours of operation, I was under the impression that the outboards oil consumption was fairly high. Today I understood why. The oil pump was NOT set at the completely closed position, as described in the manual. It was at about 2/5 inch open, while in idle.
I still remember the motors mechanic when I first bought the outboard, telling me that I should premix oil in the petrol at the ratio of 1 to 200...which I did.
So, I understand that he chose to operate the outboard with a very high oil ratio, probably trying to avoid any operation issues ... i reckon...
Am I to expect any carbonisation or other issues from the oil-rich operation ?
I am using Amsoil HP injector oil

when you adjust the oil pump control arm your looking for .005" to .020" between the stop pin and the arm, with the throttle shutter COMEPLEATLY closed NOT on the idle stop screw but COMPLEATLY closed.

Rodbolt, thanks for your time and effort to explain stuff to me !
Concerning distance between stop pin and arm, with the idle stop screw not touching the carb, it is about .12"
Should I readjust according to your specs considering age of motor ?

                  specs are specs
I have never seen the specs change according to age of a motor.

What caused the motor to be rebuilt 2 times already?
That is what you need to looking out for and it is usually lean fuel/ air ratio not oil, unless the maintenance is not kept up with on the oil system

Specs are specs, and the manufacturers engineers know everything about what they design and build.
However, sometimes and under specific circumstances, I value more the opinion of a knowledgeable outboard mechanic who has seen much, and experienced even more.
This is the reason I try to discuss stuff, instead of opening up the manual.
