  • Fuel Management System Sender problem

Hi, Can someone please email the installation instructions or the link if they know where to find it. I have installed the system, however I think the sender may be faulty. It seems to restrict the fuel to the motor after about 5 minutes of running (which is when the internal engine filter bulb runs out of fuel). It is installed after the filter and before the primer bulb, but the primer cannot suck the fuel up to prime the motor with the sender installed. When I take the sender out it works fine.

I was able to blow through the unit, and it looks clean and doesn't seem to have any obstructions. I will try and test it with power on again, but I would think that these things should fail safe and let fuel through in any case. Has anyone experience any fuel restrictions after installing this?

    Any suggestions?

I've never had mine off to check but could the unit be leaking in air and you loose prime? If the unit was restricting flow the prime bulb would go flat from suction.

Yes Tucker, I thought of this also, but there is no air leakage, because the bulb does suck in and not return back into shape when an attempt to reprime is performed. This tells me there is no air leak.

Thanks for your help all the same.

other than a paddle wheel and a screen on the inlet there isnt anything in the sensor.

Rodbolt, yes it does look fairly simple, but I thought perhaps the padle wheel might have a pickup that locked when power was applied which means it is faulty.

Given that there is a fuel flow problem when the unit is installed and there is no problem as soon as you remove it from the line, then what else could it be but faulty.

As I stated in the first post, there is no visible restriction in the screen at either end and the paddle wheel turns freely when you blow or suck the air through. I will run some more tests with power on and post the results but still confused.

like I said, there is a paddle wheel and a coil of wire on a post.
the coil has a 5v reference and as the wheel paddles pass it the pick off wire is a 5V digital square wave.
            its a hall effect device.
no parts avalible for it but if the gasket doesnt tear you can remove the 4 screws and inspect it.
only moving part is the paddle wheel.

You can always test for restrictions with a fuel pressure/vacuum gauge by teeing in the gauge at different points in the system to see just exactly where the restriction is, if there is one.

Thanks for the reply guys. Yes I checked that I am getting a 5v reference at the sensor so I don't think it is electrical, and I know the fuel flow problem is at this point because I don't have a problem when it is removed.

I'm just going to have to get a replacement one i think.

Thanks for all suggestions and at least it doesn't sound like a common problem.

Sorry if I missed this question already answered.
Can you pump the bulb with
                    the wires unplugged ?
Did you unhook it from the fuel system, plug it in
Turn system on & try to blow thru it ?

Thanks Michael, I will run some more of these tests tomorrow and see how I go. Good suggestions thanks.

I will try again to explain.
there is NOTHING inside the sender.
a paddle wheel, doesnt even matter if it moves, and a very large mesh screen.
unplugged, plugged in it simply doesnt matter.

Maybe it's directional with an anti siphon valve, turn it around and try again.

How do you test the sender?
Do you connect voltage, or ohm it out?
My unit has not been operational for years (just got the boat) it stays at 0.0, never moves.
