Leaking Level Sending Unit on 90TRLD Oil Tank

I have a 2005 90TRLD. The level sending unit on the oil tank is leaking around the seal to the tank. The design of this tank is such that the normal operating level of the oil tank is above the connection for the level sending unit. A friend of mine with the same engine had the same problem. Is there a fix for this problem or do I have to buy a new tank and level sending unit? Apparently a local mechanic told my friend buying a new tank and sending unit was the only good option. I tried a tie wrap on the top of the seal for the level sending unit to see if it would seal and was unsuccessful. Are there any simple modifications that can be made to get this working? The design does not seem ideal, but I have had a few non ideal designs of my own.

clean the oil off good with a degreaser and try some JB weld around the leaking area..I have used it to successfully seal gas tanks.
