2001 HPDI Readout

I recently bought a boat with the hour meter reading 478 Hours on the 01 150 HPDI. When I had it hooked to a computer the hour reading was something outrages like 6539 hours. Mechanic told me the ECU may be fried ($1800) but the motor runs.

Heard that on some 2000 and 2001 HPDIs the ECU's may not have been set to record hours and this is the default. Can anyone confirm this is the case?
