2005 40 hp yamaha regulator rectifier

Hi im from st croix us virgin islands, my husband have a 40 hp 2005 yamaha motor, it needs a new regulator rectifier, but i have a problem the engine do not have the id plate so i dont know the model number for this engine, my question is, can a 1988 or older regulators fits the 2005 yamaha.


The engine runs and in few days the battery dies, he puts another battery and it keeps doing the same thing over and over again. Oh i forgot, how we can find if the engine is american or japanes.

Is it a 2 stroke or 4 stroke motor?
Here is the part # for a 2 stroke and if you look at the lower part of the page it shows what all years and models it fits.
