  • How do I remove the Starter Bendix?

I have a 2000 V Max 150 and at a certain RPM the Bendix works its way up the starter shaft and bounces on the flywheel. There is a spring above the gear that should prevent this. I want to stretch the spring, but since there is no nut on top to remove, I'm not sure how.
    Thanks,
    Dan

There is a wire band at top of shaft that will have to be removed(will need to be replace with a new one) to get bendix off.

Should the bendix be greased occasionally? If so, how do you get it up?

to remove the bendix you really should dissasemble the starter.
place the lower armeture shaft on a block of wood.
use a socket slightly larger than the upper shaft and tap the lock collar down.
          retreive the two wire clips.
its the same way automotive has been done the past 40 years that I know of.

I knew someone would take this right to the gutter Guy on another forum posted starter wouldn't engage fly wheel. Years ago when this happened on your '68 chevy, you rapped it with a happer and it would pop up. Not worth worrying about on an outboard?

big BIG HUGE difference between a starter on a 68 chevy and a permanant magnent starter on a yamaha outboard.
however not everyone has a clue of the difference between field coils and permmanant magnents.
DO NOT strike the yamaha starter with a hard object, unless you wish to buy another.

Nor the tilt and trim motor as their magnets are glued into place also.
