  • 1986 30 HP Yamaha(Mariner) 2 str fuel pump problem

I just installed a new fuel pump out of the box,3 new hoses, cleaned filter....enigine will run w/starting fluid but still no fuel to carb. How can I test the pump? With it removed, should pressure or vacuum occur at the port to the engine block if I turn it over? . I also have new fuel and tank, new plugs set to spec in manual. I just bought the engine, Please advise. Thanks

what is the compression on all cylinders?
Did you check for spark on all plugs with a spark tester?
The primer bulb will push fuel through the pump and into the fuel bowls on the carbs, so it should fire up if the motor has good compression and spark, and your carbs are clean.

The compression is good, the seller checked it, he's a mechanic...I personally didn't witness it...I cant see or smell gas in the carb, I pumped til the filter was almost full but couldnt tell if it made it to the pump, the bulb was hard...I have to check the spark too..thought since it runs with start fluid that the spark was good..thanks

It ended up being the needle valve area, fuel inlet was clogged on the carb, tore it down, put it back and she cranks every time, idles good.....now for the lake test this week! Thanks 99 for the info!
