  • Mid 1990's 90hp yamaha 2 stroke

I have a overheating problem and I have read a number of these posts trying to figure out the problem, but I haven't seen the same problem posted yet.

My overheat light is on immediately when I start the boat and does not turn off. I just pulled the boat out of the shop and it is 25 degrees out, yet the overheat light is on. The motor runs good at idle and there is water coming out of the pee stream.

Any suggestions on where I should start?

    Thanks, I appreciate it.

most likly a 703 box and someone plugged the gray leads (bullet connectors) together under the hood.

I pulled the numbers off the motor and it is 1989. I checked the electrical diagram and I don't see a 703 box listed.

pulled the wrong numbers, for the US market the 703,701 sidemounts have been here since about 84 as has the 704 binnicale.
I cant see what you have via mind control, all I see is what is typed.
however hull rigging was NOT shipped in the box with the motor when it left japan.
what your 90 is rigged with only you know, for now.

There is the old Rodbolt I have known and seen in the past, don't get too wound up.
Apparently I got started later today than you.

The motor model # and all other control/instrument info is needed for anyone to have an idea of what all you are talking about

Sorry about wasting your time with the lack of information, hopefully this will help.

It is a 1989 Yamaha 90ETLF 2 stroke outboard, other numbers on the motor are 6H1 L 472824. The original boat was recalled and the motor is now on a 2003 G3 V170. On the dash is a "overheat" sensor light that is on. I bought it used this fall and don't know what the original boat was, but probably something similar.

            Thanks for your help.

              ok
              G3
they were noted for running non yamaha rigging.
              good hulls, rigged funky.

its going to have a 703 side mount or the 6x3 flush mount or something totally aftermarket.
if your getting a light but no alarm check the alarm system.
              to check, remove the hood.
look at the upper stbd side of the cyl head.
locate the temp switch. turn the key to ON.
unplug the PINK wire and ground the harness side to the block.
lamp should light and horn will sound.
if the lamp lights but no horn you have 2 issues.
if the lamp is lit with key on, the horn sounds when the wire is grounded and then the lamp is lit without the pink wire grounded then someone has incorrectly plugged up the gray wire.
              or its pinched and shorted.
