    I have a 1998 yamaha 60 hp 2 stroke outboard.
I have had 3 Yamaha mechanics attempt to fix the problem, to no avail.
The motor runs fine at top end but runs horrible at idle and smokes like a chimney. One mechanic said that he gets it running fine at idle then it goes right back to running bad. Carb was rebuilt but that didn't help.
Spent over $1000 and still have not found the problem.
    HELP!

    Run a compression test.
Check the rear seal in oil pump to see if leaking and have oil pump output tested, check for ruptured diaphrams in fuel pump.

      Thanks for the info.
My motor is not oil injected, I have to mix it. I have even drained my gas tank and tried using less oil and it made no difference.
ALso, prior to buying the boat I had the marina do a compression test and they said that it was fine. Another mechanic did it again a year later and it was still fine.

Do not use less oil. As in post 2, a leaking fuel pump diaphram will allow extra fuel to be sucked into the no 3 crankcase through the hole that serves to operate the pump.

Thank you. I will try one more time and have it checked in the spring.
It really is too bad because it runs nice at top end.
Hopefully the next mechanic will figure it out.
Another mechanic told me that it could be the fuel pump and when I ran it by the Yamaha mechanic, he said no. I guess I have to find a different Yamaha guy. lol

The model/SER # as stated on the bill of sale is 6H2L-357554.
The only other thing that I can add is that when docked and the water is calm, I can see gas/oil around the motor.

at home the seirel number doesnt help me, the model number will.
sounds like a diaphram is leaking, which one is model number dependant.

There is no other model # on the bill of sale. Would the model # be on the motor? The boat is all tucked away for the winter but if the model # is on the motor, I will go and dig it out.

                  Thanks.

I was able to partially get at the motor and the only other number
that I could locate is "C60TLRW." I could not uncover the motor cover at this time to see if there is another tag at that location.

Thanks. When I saw the "60" it was promising.

                          what about the enricher setting?

Was looking at my motor and under carb baffel part in front carbs, I found red switch been playing around with mine maybe yours needs to be set normal? Just a guess and rodbolt will know solution.

tells me its a commercial model, non oil injected,60 hp trim,20" shaft remote con*****ed 1998 model.
myself I would carefully inspect both the fuel pump diaphram AND the rime start diaphram and the entire prime start system.
I would also do a dealer locator search and find a dealer with a master tech or at least one with fuel and electrical training certs on the wall.

I will do my homework and find a different certified Yamaha dealer, if possible.
                              Thank you.
