9.9hp 4 stroke rebuilt water pump but the shift shaft came out of lower unit and put gear case into gear. cannot get out of gear to finish install, shift shaft goes in but not attaching to anything just pulls out. how do I get lower unit out of gear?? Thanks in advance

bummer.
only way to reinsert the shift shaft is by removing the propshaft and bearing carrier.
the shift clutch pin is springloaded to move it into fwd gear.
when you disengaged the shift cam the pin goes fwd against the case making it impossible to reinstall the cam/shaft assy.

if this is a salt water motor it may require oxy/acetylyne to remove the carrier.
