  • Water in lower unit- Outboard

    Hi Guys,

I am new to the site. I was winterizing my 2 Stroke 225HP OX66 outboard today. I drained the gear oil and it was very milky. The top vent screw was very loose, I believe this is how the water got in. My questions are

What type of damage would this cause?
Besides the vent plug being loose what seal would allow water to get in the gear case and how easy are they to replace?
Should the seals be changed anyway?

    Thanks,

    Kevin

the vent plug is probably your cause but you can also change out the 2 seals under the water pump and a little harder the seals at carrier bearing.
replace both gaskets at fill and vent plugs, be sure you remove both first and you might also fill, run, drain to try and rid of all water

pressure check the unit, that will tell if the seals are leaking.
Salt water will cause a lot more damage to the bearings and gears, but even fresh water can cause rust if the water sets on it for awhile
