  • Winterizing 115 HP 4stroke

I have recently purchased a used boat with a 2001 115HP Yamaha 4stroke model 115TRZ. I have read the sticky on winterizing and downloaded the 'Off-Season Storage Tech Tip'. These all advise not to run the motor out of fuel. However the owner's manual that came with the motor (March 2000 version) states "Remove the fuel line connections or shut off the fuel valve, if equipped. Run the engine at idling speed supplying fresh water to flush the cooling water passages until the fuel system becomes empty and the engine stops.
Which is the correct/preferred procedure and what are the reasons?
I would appreciate if this matter can be clarified for me as I want to do what's best.
    Thanks for any advice.

You can never run a motor until it dies and get all the fuel out of all of the system, there is always some left behind, what ever is left will evaporate that much sooner and leave a residue behind to plug passages and jets. Not only that but you are running some of the cylinders lean as one carb will run out before the others.
If you leave it full of stabilized fuel there is a better chance the it will not all evaporate to leave the residue. Just my opinion on the subject

Thank you, it makes sense that if full of fuel it is less likely to completely evaporate leaving a residue. The model number I quoted was incorrect, it is a F115TLRZ which is the fuel injected model.
