  • bent prop shaft. HELP

    =( grounded the engine.

    lower unit is still workable.
    shaft is bent.
is there any special tools i need to open up the lower unit and replace the prop shaft.
Would i need to also replace any gaskets?
    Thanks for you help

    Paul,
The lower unit pretty much has to be disassembled to get the prop shaft out. The Yamaha shop manual calls for at least three special tools for the job.
I am currently working on a 95 C115 for a fishing buddy that has water intrusion into the lower unit. I am pretty sure the prop shaft seal is leaking, and after I studied the Yamaha shop manual, I decided to let my marine mechanic do the job. To quote Clint Eastwood in one of his "Dirty Harry" ****** - "a man has to realize his limitations" - I don't have those three special tools, nor do I plan to purchase them - I recommend you let someone who has "been there, done that" take care of your prop shaft problem.
If your outboard is at least ten years old, then I would replace all the oil seals and o-rings.
The shaft can be either straightened or a new one put in - your marine mechanic can suggest which route is best.
If you have trouble finding a good mechanic in Houston to do the job, PM me, and I will give you the name of mine over here in Orange - he's the best I have ever used - you will get a discount if you take just the lower unit to him like I did.
    Good luck,
    Ken K

      Thanks ken for you help
ive been quoted between 800 to 1200 to replace the bent shaft. That is too much for me. A new shaft is around 200 ( from a yamaha dealer)
if you dont mind can i get a number so i can call him and get a quote.

          Paul,

Prices seem in line for what you need from a dealer. What size motor do you have?? Dealer costs for the following are:

          V4 1985 - 2003
          new $1290
          Rebuilt $1090

V6 get confusing due to many different offerings, but
          1985 - 2003 (spanner nut style)
          rebuilt - $1070

Dealer markup would be 20-40% plus 2 hours labor.
