  • 2002 200 VMAX I have a Problem...

Most the time the motor starts and runs normal. Every once in a while (and it is happening more often) the motor will fail to start but once it does it runs normal. I have been working on this thing trying to figure out what part needs replacing. And after quite a few test have come to the High Pressure Fuel Pump. When the motor is acting normal and I turn the key to On I hear the pump running. When I am having this problem on the lake and take the cowling off and turn the key to On I do not hear the pump. What could be going out that would sometimes tell the pump to run and other times not tell it to run. Any and all advice welcomed... Also, is this a characteristic of the pump going out?

I'm no expert, but I had my share of yami issues. The manual states if voltage is below a certain point 9 or 10 volts, the pumps will not work. Also, did you check the igintion switch? I just replaced mine as it was acting up. At least rule out any possible issue. Good luck.

Thanks, I'll check the ignition switch. I just love intermitant problems..

I did some testing and found that when the motor will crank I have 12 V to the pump. When I have the failure there is 0 V to the pump. What could be going out that would cause this to happen?

        Thanks

Updated. Maybe someone on here could tell me what my problem is.

Did some more testing. Found that when there is no problem and it runs fine. There is 12 v to the pump and injectors. When I am having the problem I am missing the 12V positive but have the negative. I am thinking that this clears the CID (Computer) but leaves me 2 possible bad parts. 1 is the Relay switch that checks the O2 sensor and the other is the High Pressure Resistor on the top of the motor. Does anyone have a way of testing each of these parts to verify which one is bad. Number 1 cost about 158.40 and Number 2 cost 107.77. I don't want to replace both parts unless I have to.

            Thanks for any help

does it turn over and no SPARK/START or not even turn over when this happens...

recently a friend had an issue whereas the HP pump would get intermittent 12v

we turned key ON and switched batt switch on and off numerous times to find this, with hand on VST

              ALSO

you have a neutral stop in 704
check if you have shift switch

Yes the motor turns over and over and over. It has spark. If I pull the Cowling I can hear the pump when it has power. I have also attached a Voltmeter to the legs of the pump (Red/Yellow = Positive and Blue = Negative) and can see when I have voltage to the pump or not. I have also discovered that the same Positive Red/Yellow wire provides power to all my injectors. I have hard wired a positive and negative from the battery to the legs on the pump and have a switch on the positive side. When I have the failure I can turn on the switch and the motor runs fine again. Creative but not how I want it to work LOL..

In my studies of this problem and troubleshooting I have ruled out the Kill switch and the gear shift as possible problems. I have also ruled out the ignition switch. My next test will be to remove the negative side lead off the pump and see if it continues to work with my switch and a hard wire to the positive side of the pump. This should rule out the CID as it controls the negative side of things.

I have isolated the loss of power to the Relay that feeds power to the High Pressure Fuel Pump and the injectors. But on that relay I found a yellow and a black wire in a connector and have learned that the yellow wire goes back to the key switch. Is there anyone here that can tell me how to test this relay to see if I need a new Relay or if I need a new Key switch?

                    Thanks
