What octane fuel should I use in my Yamaha Outboard?

Answer
Most Yamaha outboards are made to run on 86-octane fuel (R+M/2 or “pump” octane). There are some exceptions which are designed to run on 89 octane. Those engines are the F250, F300, F350, and Four-Stroke Sport models.

I have a 1993 55hp Yamaha, when I bought it (6wks ago) the seller told me all he used was 93 octane.
Should I continue to use 93, or can I use 86 octane??

Just run the regular 87 octane fuel, but install a water/fuel separator filter(Walmart $27), easy to install, save yourself a lot of problems with ethanol, water, debris in your fuel system.
