  • cooling problem

Just bought a 25 hp mariner, took it out on the water, after a few minutes water stopped squirting out from pee hole, after 30 sec water started coming out again with heaps of steam, did that to me all day. i got the impellor changed but still does same thing. Im stumped because if i place ear muffs on the water pisses out no worries and doesnt stop but if i put motor in a tank or take boat in the sea the problem occurs. I was told tha i may need new leg but not sure.

Damn i would check it then to see if maybe it has not dropped out when you put the new impeller on .

The reason that it does no get hot on the hose and muffs is because it is having water force through it from the garden hose.

when the engine is running the impeller is in charge of water flow i was thinking that impeller must be slipping on shaft ?

ive taken it apart and key and impellor are ok. Would it have anything to do with the housing?

all water cooled motors I have seen have thermostats to regulate the temperature.
If yours has been removed you need to put one back in.
The restriction is needed to make the water flow to all parts of the motor properly

try blowing compressed air through the pee hole...

at times, spiders/bugs/etc go up in there get stuck/clogged and restrict the flow...

what makes you think it does not have a thermostat?

when i had the leg off i placed the hose on the pipe that takes the water to the motor and heaps of water pressure was coming from pee hole. I would have thought that if there was a thermostat the water wouldnt have come out that much or not at all untill it opened. If the problem was with the thermostat why does it only occur when the motor is in a tub or out to sea. When the ear muffs are on with hose pressure the water shoots out non stop.

Ive taken the leg off again and hooked the ear muffs on and noticed that water was coming through the top of the housing where the shaft comes through, is this supposed to happen
