I have a 2005 yamaha 25 hp four stroke with very low hours. I went to do some shrimp scouting the other day anticipating the upcoming season and for some reason the motor will not go into reverse. There was no noise or anything that would make you think the gears had broken. I took the lower unit completely apart and everything looks fine. There is no wear, no chipped or broken gears, the shaft that engages the drive is not bent or worn, the spring is still tight. Any ideas on what could be the problem?
