I began to repair the water pump in my 90 and ran into a snag. I read both my manuals but could not find the answer. I installed the impeller and found that it is much bigger than the insert cartridge. Am I suppose to squeeze the fins of the impeller to get it to fit? If so do the fins bend around clockwise or counter clockwise? While I’m at it, which way does the drive shaft turn when in gear? I was told to never turn the driveshaft in the wrong direction or the impeller will be damaged; is that correct?

The driveshaft turns clockwise. Spray some silicone spray on the impeller and turn the driveshaft clockwise while you squeeze the rubber impeller into the housing. Its a circus act but that's how its done. Its easier with two people doing it. One to turn the driveshaft and one to squeeze the impeller into the housing. Yes if you turn the driveshaft counterclockwise and get the impeller ears going in the wrong direction you will greatly reduce the impeller's efficiency and service life. Not to mention the overheats from lack of waterflow.
