1980 YAMAHA 75hp

Hi to you all
i'am new to boating and have a fletcher arrowsport 150 with a 1980 yamaha
75hp motor i've been out on the lake twice,
but seem to have trouble selecting reverse, when selecting it makes a grinding noise.
i have checked the gearcase oil and all is clean and ok.
could some body tell me how to adjust it or set it up

Try taking shift cables loose from engine and shift engine by hand to see if problem is in controls or in engine.

i have tryed that and it still grinds slightly so could this mean there is a problem with the box/ gears? thanks for you help.
