  • Hit A Rock

I hit a rock at about 20 knots. Busted off the skag. Motor amazingly enough still runs fine turns up to about 58 whatever RMP's after that cavetates after that. Can I repair with a homemade skag on to bottom of lower unit. Or do I need to have a new lower unit installed. Big money I would guess. I looked @ the diagram of the part and it looks a little daunting to install a new lower unit.

There's a product called Skegard that will bolt right on, that is if you have enough left of your skeg to bolt to. Otherwise check around your marinas and boat dealers for the name of a good welder who can fabricate you a new skeg out of aluminum plate and weld it on, grind/file it to shape, paint, and you'll be ready for that next big rock!
