96 15hp yamaha

I have a 1996 15 hp engine on my 14 ft carolina skiff. Yesterday when I was on my way back to the dock it just started making loud clicking noises when it was on plane. I killed it then ran again. It happened again so for the rest of the trip back I went barely on plane and it didn't happen again. Whats wrong with it?

Check compression on engine, check gearcase oil for metal or water in gearcase, check prop.
