  • Reluctant starting

My Yamaha T9.9 runs ok except it is reluctant to start. I have to remove the
cover and goose the accelerator linkage to start it.

Probably needs carb cleaned and primer system checked.

      Same outboard (1999) same problem.

I use to remove cover and choke the air intake while starting, then it runs OK.

What do you mean for "primer system checked" ? do you refer to the fuel pump and, in this case, what you suggest to check, given it then works properly ?

The engine is used rarely, as it is on a sailboat as auxiliary

      Many thanks

        Reluctant starting

I think he was refering to the Yamaha 'prime start' system found on many of their smaller outboards. It is meant to replace the function of a choke by automatically giving a rich mixture to the carb until the engine warms up and it shuts this enhanced mixture down.

I wish I had a diagram of how this unit is assembled. I should not have taken it apart when cleaning the carb, and I am afraid I put the few pieces back incorrectly.
