I have a 200 hp yamaha outboard. New lower unit and the engine has ran in the drive way for about 45min total with no problems. No oil pump so I mix the gas at 50:1 exactly with outboard marine oil. I was running the engine normally for about 10 min on the water and at about half throttle when it suddenly shut down. It then would not crank but the flywheel did turn about an inch and seemed to stop dead every time I cranked it. Any ideas?

Is it possible that something is obstructing the flywheel? The engine did not seem hot any there was no smoke or any real strange noises when it stopped.

Can you turn flywheel by hand in the correct direction ? Yes, is battery good ? If no, possible lower unit locked up ?

The lower unit is brand new. I check it in neutral and the prop turns. It doesn't turn in fwd and rvs so it seems that is fine.

I know you don't want to hear this, but you need to drop the lower unit to tell whether it's that or the motor that's locked up.Good luck with it,Tom

What am I looking for if I remove the lower unit? (removing it isn't a big deal, already replaced it so I familiar with the process.) thanks

              PGA Championship 2010.

Did you guys catch Tiger Wood's awful play at PGA 2010? I feel that his **** is slipping. What do you think about Tiger?

I think what they are getting at is that if your lower unit has seized up and you remove it - they try turning the flywheel in the correct direction. If it moves as expected - your problem is something in the lower unit.
