25hp 2 stroke wont get into reverse and 14' boat wont plane

14' carolina skiff has issues getting into reverse-makes clack, clack and does not get into reverse-if the cable is taken off-you can manually get it into reverse. Also, might or not be related-boat will not plane w/2 people-and it used to-not sure if the 2 are related? Also has a 12 prop pitch w/big ding any help-i hate to take it to a repair as they always seem to take advantage if you dont appear to know alot- & i dont

Might try replacing cable, if prop is damaged then it will affect performance, may need to be repaired or replaced.
