I'm looking at buying a '87 70hp that has been run hot. The water pump has been since replaced. Now it has a slight knocking noise coming from it. I haven't heard it run but, I trust the man I'm buying it from. Worse case scenerio, were would the knock be coming from? Thanx

Dan,
I am not real familiar with the damage that can be caused by overheating a 2-stroke outboard,
but I would think that the crank would be about the last thing that would get hurt. I would expect that a piston would seize up before the crank got damaged.
You really need a trusted marine mechanic to check out the outboard and give you an evaluation.
Just try to give him a complete history, as much as you can, about what the outboard has been thru.
That's what I would do if I had any questions about the extent of any possible damage from overheating.
Good luck,
Ken K
