I have what looks like a lower crankshaft seal leaking . Does anyone know if you have to split the block to replace the seal?. My manual is not very clear if you have to, I thank you do ,but it would make life a whole lot easier if you don't.Thanks in advance..

maybe a dumb question...but how do you SEE a lower crank leak.... i would assume to even gettin close to seein anything in that area the block would have to be off the motor to see the bottom... unless maybe you have leakage runnin down your shaft to lower unit.... for the upper as i remember you can replace without splitting...not sure about the bottom.

jb If you remove the coweling under powerhead on the side of motor you can see where the driveshaft goes into the powerhead at the lower crankshaft seal.Mine has oil on it and it drips down my mid section.So if anyone knows if you have to crack block to remove lower crankshaft seal.?? thanks

I guess its could be how do you know if your losing crankcase pressure? ... More background info I just rebulit motor (with some help) Friend that helped is out of town fishing SKA, anyway ,I have all new pistons ,rings, I had to replace crankshaft (with good used one)I had lower crankshaft bearing go bad and replaced also when lower bearing went bad it chewed up my lower crankseal housing,so we replaced it with used one from where I got crankshaft.It was good and seals were good (I thought) I can't remeber if you have to split block to remove lower crankseal ?? I guess I could wait on my buddy to return, but I'm just to impatiance. Thanks

if youre motor is runnin great, then your fuel mix is good or it would have burned up, no crankcase leak, as that would probably burn your motor also,i would suggest gunking your motor round the base gasket area and watch your oil pump for a leak.
