shifting problem

My early 90s 30 hp shifts fine into forward and reverse but if I go faster in reverse I hear a grinding or meshing sort of sound. If i go slow in reverse it works fine.
I think to me it sounds like the shifting adjustment is not correct.
Should I adjust the shift cable so it goes further into reverse?

Phil,
While on the water, I would loosen the shift cable at the motor, and manually push the shifter farther into reverse and try running it to see if that makes any difference.
