1998 yamaha 30hp outboard 3 cyl (30mlhw)

Just picked up this motor and the previous owner says that it still runs but there is a knocking sound when running. A mechanic told him the sound is crank related. I noticed that the flywheel can be moved up and down by about 1/8'' to 3/16''. Also there was work done on the foot which might suggest something was hit and put stress on the crankcase...??????

I am not a mechanic, actually I'm a carpenter by trade and just recently started enjoying doing repair work on motors. Maybe this is to much for a do it yourselfer, what do you think

A crank related knock is very expensive to repair, may require a new crankshaft assy.
