  • Rebuild or Not?

Need some advice... before I start to restore my boat I want to make sure that I have a dependable motor. What I have is 1990 250ETXD that I am in the process of finding a new lower unit for. Before the foot went out I had had the carburetors cleaned (they just took them apart and cleaned them no parts replaced, but did fix the problem) and the compression checked. The compression was around 125 on three cylinders, two @ 120 and one @ 95. The guy sprayed some ring free in the 95 cylinder and we ran the it for about 10 minutes and it came up to 110. He said due to the motor setting for so long that I should run it for a while and then recheck the compression, have not rechecked after running for about ten 10 hours. The motor starts and runs OK now but still need the carbs totally rebuilt.

My thinking is I am replacing the foot for around $800 and rebuild parts I guessing would run around $1500 and another $600 for other parts. So for $3000 - $3500 I will have a practically new motor compared to $8000 for a decent later model used engine and $18,000 for a brand new one...

    What would you do?

If the motor runs O.K. and you get a good used lower unit on it, you should be in pretty good shape. I would run the "deposit removal" dosage of Ringfree for the first couple of tanks to remove any carbon or deposits that may be on your piston rings or grooves. Install a fuel/water seperator on your fuel line, very easy, cheap preventive maintenance. Walmart sells one for $27

Thanks for the info. Once the foot is fixed I will try out the Ringfree treatment. Already installed the water separator.
