  • 1997 40hp slipping!!!!

Fellows, I bought a 18ft. used Pontoon boat this past weekend. It has a 1997 40hp on it,I took it out yesterday for a trial run and it ran great"for a while" then it began slipping it remined me of a cluch on a standard shift car slipping.Anybody have an idea what this might be. When you push the throttle forward it begins to slip.
    Thanks In advance
    Steve

Sounds like you have a "spun prop", where the rubber cushion between the inner hub part and the outer blades part has failed. They are repairable at certain propeller shops, but for yours I'd just recommend a new prop, probably about $80 for a new aluminum one, more for stainless steel.

I had my 35 hp Johnson SS prop hub replaced a couple of years ago and it cost me around $60 but it is always a good thing to have a spare prop on board just in case you need one.

Thanks: Your exactly right I took the prop off and the rubber bushing or cushion was broke apart. I found a new one for $75.00 not an expensive fix.

Hopefully it is the same size and pitch, otherwise it will be a problem.

Like I said before it is good to have a spare with you just in case you loose a blade or you are far from home.
