  • Yamaha 9.9 DE Head Gasket?

Forgive me but I tried the search function but there were to many variables involved with the search.

I have a mid 80's Yamaha 9.9 DE which I put it back on my boat and it started on the second pull, ran for a little bit and then it seemed like it was pushing exhaust out where the coolant water comes out. So I says to my self (Blown head gasket). Am I right? It sat on the boat for another week or so and I brought it home today and pulled the plugs and the bottom cylinder spark plug had some rust on it and the top plug looked fine. Still sound like a blown head gasket?

I am pretty mechanically inclined after owning a Triumph TR 7 for many years and have a good set of tools etc.

I am broke so is this a relatively easy DIY job, and can I take the head off while the whole motor is still in the housing?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Check compression to see if one is low on compression.

I do not have a compression checking tool but I will look into getting one.

        Thanks,

I finally got a compression guage and the top cylinder has 100 psi and the bottom cylinder is 30 psi so I am going to go out on a limb and say I have a blown head gasket in the bottom cylinder..

Is there a step by step manual available on the web on how to change the head gasket?

          Thanks for any help.

Should I spray something on the bolt heads and around the head and let it soak before trying to take it apart?

I have also included a picture for ease of identification.

            Thanks,

I got all the head bolts out with little trouble.

HOW DO YOU GET THE HEAD OFF? I have not tried anything yet.

              Any suggestions?

I went from bad to worse to worser.

I got the head off and the lower cylinder dome has a hole in it and the water channel on the left side was full of corrosion and then I found a hole in the power head water jacket on the lower left side.

My photo's where a little to large to download.
