Recently took over the family boat...it sat for 2 years and just recently put it in the water. Starts great and idles great when you put it in neutral you get full rpm but as soon as you put it in gear it won't exceed 2000 rpms (had a kayak pass me...how embarrasing) so where do I start ? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure the water pump is operating properly (peeing out the discharge). Then check gas, make sure you are starting off with new/good fuel. If no results then it's carb time. Try removing the carb bowl drain plugs and see what is draining out. This will give you an idea how serious the problem is. Two years sitting is not good. Sniper -
