'87 70hp knock

I'm new here and wanted to first say this site is very informative. I'm looking at buying a '87 70hp that has been run hot. Now it devloped a knocking sound, I havent heard it run yet but is garenteed it still runs. Where should I look for the knocking sound 1st? I've never torn into a outboard, except cleaning carbs, water pump, etc before *****ing season. I've been wrenching on vehicals and atvs 2 and 4 strokes for years. By the way its complete with controls and ss prop for $400, down here thats a steal. Any help will be appreciated, thanx Dan.

Dan, Do a compression test on all 3 cylinders and limit the run time if you think there is a major problem.You don't want any more damage. ( block/crankshaft repair can be costly $$ )
