  • 200 HPDI Stalling

De-winterized boat yesterday and went out for shake down cruise. Everything was great until I was returning and was 200 yards from slip at marina and motor stalled. Motor had begun to sputter and miss for about 30 seconds prior to stalling. Was able to get back to dock, remove cover, drain out fuel cup, reprime and start. Engine still ran a little rough at first, but eventually smoothed out when idling.

I fear I have encountered some ethanol related problems. I replaced the in- line filter mid-summer last year, but not this year. Also, I did not replace the plugs yet, as I only used the boat about 8 times last year. When I stored the boat for the winter, I added stabilizer to the fuel, but obviously not enough! The head mechanic at the marina made the following suggestions:

    -new inline filter
-new filter for the fuel cup
    -new plugs
-check resistance for spark plug boots

I am also concerned about the fuel in the tank. Can I add a little more stabilizer or some type of fuel additive to the tank to help cure this problem?

Any comments or suggestions to help resolve this issue would be sincerly appreciated.

Safe boating to all - enjoy those summer months!

If gas in tank is bad then stabilizer or anything else wont help it now.

Could the gas go bad in that short a period? I used several tanks during the fall (Rockfish season) and had the tank almost full when I put it away. If you have it pumped out, what do they do with the gas? Can they recover/reuse/recycle it or can you get a credit for the gas that is removed from the tank? Any idea of the cost to pump out a tank?

Thanks to all for any responses!

Yes ethanol mix gas can go bad in a short amount of time, plug up carbs or fuel injection components. You would in your area for where to dispose of old and cost to remove it.
