yamaha f 6 cooling

I am a newbie and I just bought a used f6 4 stroke. I was wondering if it should show signs of the water pump working correctly. As I understand it, some don't. I ran it in a barrel for about 5 min., and it did not seem to overheat, but want to be sure befor I take it out and run it. The only visible hole is in the back, under the motor about 4 inches. It seems to blow exhaust.

Water should come out the tell-tale hole on back of lower cowling to let you know water pump is working, it may be plugged up and need to be cleaned.
