  • 90hp Oil Leak at driveshaft

I have a 2003 90 hp that is leaking oil out from where the driveshaft goes into the powerhead, I removed the cowling apron and can see where the shaft goes into the powerhead, when running it leaks a steady drip. Is there a o-ring, or crank seal that is in that area?

I replaced the water pump just before it started leaking, could I have damaged the seal?

    Thanks in advance!

I have a 115 4stroke doing the same thing and think mine is coming from oil pump seal. Powerhead has to come off to repair.

Mines a 2 stroke...2 different engines. The oil injection pump area is dry, matter of fact, all the powerhead under the cover is nice and dry, only area that shows any oil is around the driveshaft, and leaks steady drip when running.

Could the oil injection pump be leaking internally putting oil into the crankcase, and leak out the shaft? It's leaking where the drive shaft goes up into the powerhead (crankshaft?) splined area.

Must have a bad crankshaft seal, may have a seal leaking on inside of oil pump but even it was leaking still shouldn't have oil leak around crankshaft.

While I am sure the powerhead would have to come off, after it's off whats involved in replacing the seal? Can it be replaced w/o disasembling the engine? In the manual there apears to be a crankshaft seal housing that bolts to the case....looks like there are 2 seals facing each other, one to keep oil in and the other to keep water out of crankcase?

            Thanks for the help boats.net....

Yes you will need to remove powerhead but it wont have to be disassembled, just remove seal housing from engine and replace both seals.

I have a 2005 f90 with the same problem. Is it ok to use the engine with it leaking oil? Will water enter the engine?

No it does need to be repaired before running it.
